BREAKING: Court Grants ₦500m Bail to Malami, Wife, Son — What This Means for the High-Profile Case

The court determined that the sureties must own real property in affluent Abuja neighbourhoods like as Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa, and that they must deposit their travel documents in court.

Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, and two other defendants for ₦500 million apiece, with two sureties.

The court determined that the sureties must own real property in affluent Abuja neighbourhoods like as Asokoro, Maitama, or Gwarinpa, and that they must deposit their travel documents in court.

Justice Nwite also ordered that the property records be checked by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court, and that the sureties swear to affidavits of means.

In addition, Malami was ordered to provide his own travel documentation to the court and was prohibited from leaving the country without the court's approval.

The court had already scheduled a hearing on Abubakar Malami's bail plea for January 7, 2026, as he faces alleged money laundering accusations.

Malami, who is now confined at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, is on trial with his son, Abdulaziz Malami, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and one of his wives, Bashir Asabe, on a 16-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Malami and other defendants are accused of laundering ₦8.7 billion.

They pleaded not guilty to all allegations when they appeared before Justice Emeka Nwite on December 29, 2025.

Following their plea, the court remanded the trio to the Kuje Correctional Centre awaiting the determination of their bail application.
